Get Ready to Read! Early Literacy Screenings for 3-5 year olds 02/25/2017

Is your child ready for Kindergarten? Get Ready to Read! is an early literacy program designed to help parents ensure that young children are equipped with the fundamental skills necessary for learning to read. The goal of Get Ready to Read! is to screen children between the ages of 3 years, 6 months - 5 years, 11 months, for pre-reading skills before they enter kindergarten and provide skill-strengthening activities to ensure their reading success. Each screening takes about 10 minutes and the kids walk away with pre-reading exercises as well as a free book. The Get Ready to Read! program is a part of the Arizona Literacy and Learning Center, their Web site is: www.azlit.org.

Baby Yoga

Through gentle yoga stretches, touch, music, and singing, caretakers and babies are encouraged to bond with one another to support the emotional well being of baby, as well as, stimulate the nervous system through sensory activities that support touch, and movement. Both baby and parent will participate in repetitive soothing motions of relaxation techniques, constructive play, and experience some yoga poses and practice breathing to embrace and celebrate the developmental milestones in the first year of the baby’s life. Class is designed for children ages 5 months through 15 months and is taught by Anna Blocher-Rubin. Admission into the program is free with paid Museum admission. Space is limited.

Family Storytelling

One of Southwest Human Development’s literacy experts will educate parents on the importance of sharing family stories as a way to enhance early language and literacy, and the use of storytelling to preserve culture and heritage.   Parents will share special stories about their own families and the trainer will discuss ways to extend these memories into make-believe, predictions, and print. This workshop is designed for children ages birth to five plus a parent/caregiver and includes story time, an art activity, singing and dancing.  Each child will receive a new book to take home. www.swhd.org.  Admission into the Museum is FREE when you pre-register for this program.

June 5th-6th and July 3rd-7th: Do you have a pet lover in your family? Join us for a week of pet-inspired art and activities. Campers will explore the world of veterinary science, use a stethoscope, visit with a therapy dog, and experience live animal interactions with dragons, snakes, and some furry friends. Campers will create worry pets and collage art based on their own pets (real or imagined!), make no-bake dog treats while practicing fine motor skills as they measure, scoop, and stir; and will learn about habitats while constructing one of their own.

June 12th-16th and July 10th-14th: Calling all authors! Join us as we journey into a world of imagination, creativity, magic, and possibilities. Campers will explore the museum through fairy tales and have the opportunity to create their own stories with a local children's author. Campers will make dioramas and utilize scientific reasoning skills, as well as, problem solving and teamwork to help their fairytale friends solve a number of dilemmas. Create a parachute to help Jack escape the giant, build a sturdy house for the three little pigs, help Rapunzel construct a pulley for items to travel to and from her tower, and more!
 
Culinary Kids 06/19/2017 To 07/17/2017
June 19th-23rd and July 17th-21st: Where in the world does our food come from? During our Culinary Kids camp, campers will have the chance to explore geography and engage in dramatic play as we explore the journey of fruits and vegetables from the farm to our tables. Campers will practice financial literacy and math skills in our Market as they "purchase" ingredients to create their own recipes and nutritional meals and will also plant seeds to take home and practice the culinary arts. Learn how to spiralize veggies and fruits, make dressing, and grind spices with a local cooking expert!
 
Moonwalkers 06/26/2017 To 07/24/2017
June 26th-30th and July 24th-28th: To infinity and beyond! Join us as a space explorer and learn all about the moon. Campers will follow man's journey to the moon and have the opportunity to explore the geology of Arizona just like the Apollo astronauts explored our moon's lunar surface. Campers will learn about light and energy, explore the Sun and other stars, create rockets, design a mission patch, learn about the myths, facts, and phases of the moon, and engage their creativity as they make moon rocks and other space-inspired art.
